Rondout Rowing Club

Formed in the fall of 1998, the Rondout Rowing Club aims to further the centuries old Hudson River tradition of rowing as a sport, competitive event, and general fitness activity.

Rowing shells used by the Club were designed for speed and therefore are sleek, lightweight and fragile by nature of their inherent design. They are kept under tarps to protect them from the elements. When used they are carried west of the Museum to a launch near the Connolly overpass were they can be put into the water.

All of the wooden shells owned by the Club are approximately 20 to 25 years old and were made by the legendary George Pocock & Co. From the 1920's until the advent of fiberglass shells in the 1960's, the state of the art rowing shells in the U.S. were created in Seattle by his company. Pocock is known as the father of American Rowing and shell building. The outer hull is made from water resistant, 1/8th thick western red cedar and the inner reinforcing structure from strong but lightweight Alaskan cedar.

Initially affiliated with the Newburgh Rowing Club and the Hudson River Maritime Museum during the Club's formative period, the Club evolved out of rowing workshops conducted by Coach Ed Kennedy of the Newburgh Club. Through the commitment and vision of a dedicated core of eight founding members, and through energetic volunteer work, sponsorships and fund raisers, the fledgling Club was committed to establishing membership dues at an affordable level. This makes rowing accessible to a broad based population of high school and college students, ex-rowers, masters, veterans and the elderly.
