The weekend of May 17 and 18, we will raise the topmasts of the Half Moon. This is an interesting job, with line handling and team work. Raising the topmasts requires eight hands (people), some who work in the rig, and some who work on the deck. With everything set-up the job will take about six hours in good weather. We will plan for work on both days, just to account for rain or wind that may delay us. Work will start at 9AM on Saturday and Sunday, and end by 3PM on Sunday.
If you are able to help, please reply to by e-mail to JayPocius@PeoplePC.com indicating the day you can participate. More specific information may be obtained by calling 518.443.1609
Cori Cumming will host a potluck dinner in the Barge at King Marine on
Saturday, May 17, open to anyone and everyone, regardless of whether you
worked on the ship or not. The potluck will start at 6PM at the Barge
at King Marine. Please reply to Cori if you can help or are able to be
there. She can be reached at 914.739.0094 or by e-mail at <unicornhopeful@aol.com>
You might guess this will be an informal, but upbeat and optimistic affair.
Janine Oosterloo started the weekend with a training course for those who are interested in working aloft (in the rigging). Regardless of previous training, anyone wishing to go aloft on the Half Moon will need to take an annual course in the use of the safety harness and methods of climbing in the rig. This training will be offered throughout the year, according to demand and work schedule. The earlier you receive the training the better. Completing their training this past weekend were Janine Oosterloo, Bob Procnow, Nicholas Reynolds, Chip Reynolds.
We met our goals on May 10 and 11, with several projects completed, even above and beyond the harness training. Following the harness training, Janine Oosterloo and Bob Procnow went into the fore top and removed the fore flagstaff for refinishing. Nicholas Reynolds worked with the Captain to troubleshoot the generator, which they returned to working condition, and then moved into an analysis of power demand by the major appliances aboard the ship. The objective is to reduce the number of generator shutdowns due to excessive power demand. In addition, the winter tarps are down (except for being reinstalled when the rain comes), and fresh drinking water is aboard (makes the ship much more habitable).
If you are one of those lucky people available during the week, Janine Oosterloo welcomes your participation. Please call her in advance at 914.413.9924 to ensure that she will be aboard when you can work, as she is often away obtain supplies, etc.

From the North: If you are coming from the North, get on Route 9 heading south, go through Peekskill, take the exit for Buchanan. At the foot of the exit you can look ahead past the Westchester Diner to a railroad overpass. Go under the overpass and take the next right turn at the light; go to the next light and turn left; go about a mile to the second light in Verplanck and turn right. You will see the Hudson River straight ahead; you will see the entrance to King Marine marked by a small white sign on the left through the wooden fence. Please take care, respect the property and proceed to the ship.
From the South: If you are coming from the south, get on Route 9 heading north from Croton; exit at Montrose, and get on Route 9A north (turn left). Go north a couple of miles, passing the Veteran's Hospital. Turn left on King's Ferry Road (three way intersection with a traffic light, and a volunteer fire station and deli on the corner). At the first light bear to the right, at second light bear left. Continue west on King's Ferry Road past Lake Meagh, through two more traffic lights. After you pass the second light, go a short distance and you will see the Hudson River straight ahead; you will see the entrance to King Marine marked by a small white sign on the left through the wooden fence. Please take care, respect the property and proceed to the ship.
