For ten days beginning in Albany on July 3 and ending in New York City on July 13, a group of paddlers and guides will paddle over 145 miles of the Hudson River camping each night at prearranged sites along the way.
The Great Hudson River Paddle (GHRP 2003) is being held to celebrate the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail, the improvement of public access to the Hudson River, and the diversity and heritage of the riverside communities of the Hudson River Valley.
GHRP 2003 has something for everyone. For skilled, committed paddlers it’s a chance to paddle over 145 miles from Albany to New York City. For new or inexperienced paddlers it is a chance to get out on the Hudson River under the safe tutelage of knowledgeable local outfitters. For those who want to join in the celebration of the Hudson River and its communities from the shore it offers a series of festivals showcasing local cultural demonstrations, kayaking skills, information booths, and natural resource programs.
River front festivals will be held in the afternoon and evening at each stopping point. Some of the planned events include on water kayak and canoe trials, concerts and performances, tours of historic homes, lighthouses, and museums, and exhibits by the Hudson Water Trail Association and Hudson River Valley Greenway.
