Waterford Tugboat Roundup

Waterford's tugboat tradition continues this year Friday, September 5th through the 7th as the Town of Waterford, NY, hosts the 5th Annual Waterford Tugboat Roundup.

For more information contact the Waterford Harbor Visitor Center at (518) 233-9123.

The Waterford Tugboat Roundup began in 1999 as a way to preserve and promote the maritime industrial heritage of the New York State Canal System and other adjoining inland waterways. The tugboat history of the region, and particularly Waterford, is especially rich. For most of the 20th century, tugboats lined the shores here, whether waiting to lock up through the magnificent “Flight” or competing for some day work with a local company.

For one weekend each year, however, Waterford’s historic waterfront is transformed back into a rendering of its commercial heyday. Tugs new and old moor stem to stern for adulation and education, enchanting the young and reminding the young at heart of days gone by.

Festivities commence on Friday with a tugboat parade from Albany to Waterford. The tugs are scheduled to depart Albany at 3 P.M. on Friday, and arrive in Waterford at around 6 P.M. While waiting for the tugs, those in attendance will be serenaded by canal balladeer George Ward. As always, a full compliment of events is in store for the entire weekend. What follows will be a night of reverie and two days of maritime heritage celebration. From the marine flea market along the battery, to Saturday's chicken barbecue, to distinguished speakers
