Winter MemoriesPhotographs of Our GardenIf you have wandered around the rest of our site, you may have noticed a lot of space devoted to snowshoeing. Winter sports are something we enjoy if we are lucky enough to have snow. Snow, however, is a very problematic subject here.
The January thaw is very much a reality here. In a warm winter, it threatens to awaken the dormant plants with a few months of winter yet to go. In a cold, snowy winter, the results can be worse. The ground is frozen solid, and rain and melting snow have nowhere to go. A couple of years ago, we had several feet of snow fall in December and January. When it started to melt in late January, the resulting mess was quite impressive. The Sawkill Creek, a small stream that flows through our neighborhood, flooded one of the bridges crossing it. Usually the water level reaches the bottom of the bridge during a thaw. That year it went well over the road. A few days after these pictures were taken, the temperatures dropped below freezing, turning the road into a skating rink. It was closed for about a month, until the ice melted and the creek dropped.
