Foreword

When Marc Fried, after years of meticulous, painstaking research, completed The Early History of Kingston and Ulster County he explored the possibility of its publication being sponsored by the Ulster County Historical Society. Recognized historians considered the work a valuable addition to our historical writings and felt the careful research should not be lost. However, at that time the Society was unable to assume the responsibility for publishing and distributing the book.

Fortunately, the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bienstock has now made it possible for the Ulster County Historical Society to undertake the publication of this important work on the early history of the area. One of the provisions in the charter granted to the Society by the State of New York is "the promotion of writing the history of Ulster County." It is with a sense of pride and satisfaction that we are able to fulfill this commitment.
