The Half Moon will conduct a Voyage of Discovery with students from Philip Livingston Magnet Academy in Albany, Rensselaer Middle High School in Rensselaer, and Oneida Middle School in Schenectady.
The Voyage of Discovery is a re-creation of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage. Along the way, the Half Moon will visit locations where Henry Hudson anchored in 1609. During the voyage, the student crew will pursue a rigorous educational program and learn to operate the ship.
Starting on May 14 in New York Harbor, the Half Moon will follow the river and arrive in Albany on Friday, May 20 at noon. Join the Half Moon for an arrival ceremony at the Water Pumping Station in the Corning Preserve.
The students are posting a daily log on the Internet, and you can following their progress at www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us starting May 15.
The Half Moon is a full scale replica of the original Dutch ship of exploration sailed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch East India Company in 1609. The original Half Moon was the first European ship to document entry into what we now call the Delaware Bay and River, and to explore the Hudson River to its navigable limits.
Reports from Hudson's extraordinary voyage led Dutch traders to establish trade within the Hudson River Valley, erecting Fort Nassau at the present day site of Albany. By the mid 1620s New Netherland, as this trading colony became known, extended outward from the Hudson River Valley eastward to the Connecticut River, and south to the Delaware River.
