New York State Boating Safety Course
Offered at the Maritime Museum

April 23 — 9 AM to 1 PM
April 24 — 1 PM to 5 PM

The New York State Boating Safety Course will be offered at the Hudson River Maritime Museum the weekend of April 23 & 24, 2005. Participants are introduced to basic boating fundamentals including nomenclature, boat handling, legal requirements, the aids to navigation system, rules of the road, accidents, personal watercraft safety and more.

The course is offered in 2 sessions of four hours each. A multiple choice exam is given on the final day which must be passed with a grade of 75 or better to qualify for the New York State Boating Safety certificate. A certificate is required for those under 18 to operate a motor boat and for anyone operating a Jet Ski.

The course is free and open to participants 11 to 18 years old. Reservations are required. Call the museum at 845-338-0071 to reserve a place in the class.

The "Boating Basics" Course.

Boating Basics is an 8-hour course that provides a comprehensive overview of boat and PWC (Personal Watercraft) operation. Course components include:

  1. A description of boat characteristics, basic hull designs, nomenclature, power systems and classification by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  2. Legal requirements for the registration and titling of boats, the equipment to be carried on board and the training and certification of boat operators.
  3. Basic safety regulations, Rules of the Road and understanding the State and Federal aids to navigation systems in the waterways.
  4. Operating characteristics of boats and an introduction to basic seamanship.
  5. Accident prevention and steps to take to insure personal safety on the water; facts about boating under the influence and the effects of hypothermia on boaters; and water rescue techniques for boaters.
  6. Weather observation, chart familiarization, use of the marine compass, use of the marine VHF radio, and boating through locks and around dams.
  7. Special operational characteristics of personal watercraft; riding and handling techniques and personal protective equipment.
