Grand Opening The Hudson River Maritime Museum proudly welcomes Mayor James M. Sottile, City of Kingston and Mayor Nicholas Valentine, City of Newburgh, keynote speakers, for the opening ceremony of HRMM's 2005 season, featuring this year, "A Tale of Two Ports: Kingston and Newburgh" Admission will be free all day.

Every town along the river, from the early colonial days until well into the 19th century, had some trade on the Hudson River, but some ports were more important than others. Kingston and Newburgh were both shipping powerhouses, and became prosperous towns as a result. Both towns had local shipping barons who prospered more than everyone else at the time because of their near total control over the public means of transportation. This exhibit looks at that colorful era, as well as the Central Hudson Line, which involved Kingston, Newburgh and Poughkeepsie boats starting in 1900.

Canal schooner replica
Lois McClure

In 1823, the Northern Canal connecting Lake Champlain to the Hudson River was completed. The sailing-canal boat was designed to sail from lake ports to the entrance of the canal, and upon reaching the canal, the masts were lowered, the centerboard raised and the vessel was pulled through the canal.

The 88-foot, 1862 canal schooner replica, Lois McClure, was built and launched in Burlington VT. by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. The museum's Grand Journey Tour 2005 is retracing the historic route through the Champlain Canal and stopping at ports along the Hudson River.. The Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston is the Lois McClure's first port of call on the river.

From its vantage point at Burlington, Vermont, this highly illustrated work takes the reader on a fascinating journey through history. Blue Links Tour 2005
Once again this year, the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and Save Our Ships New York launch the "Blue Links" campaign Hudson River communities exist because of the Hudson River, which connects towns and cities throughout New York. Sadly, most of the piers and their cleats, docks, bollards and fendering systems along the Hudson are long gone, robbing the river of its vital and historic function as a highway for people and goods. Kingston will welcome the renowned John J. Harvey fireboat, and Hudson River Maritime Museum will welcome the fully restored Lehigh Valley RR Barge #79 to its docks.
